SILCHAR: The BSF on Monday seized a huge consignment of foreign-made cigarettes, worth 1.7 crore rupees, in the locality of Lakhipur of the Cachar district in Assam, near the Manipur border . Four people were arrested in this connection.
The 43 cartons of cigarettes were confiscated as they were loaded into a van from a boat anchored on the banks of the Barak River.
On suspicion, a BSF team rushed to the scene and seeing the staff, the men loading cigarettes tried to flee. However, BSF staff managed to arrest four people, including two residents of Chhattisgarh, and seized the 43 boxes. The BSF is sweeping the area more, said a senior BSF official.
“The police recovered 43 cartridges each containing 1,000 packs of cigarettes, while another cartridge contained 900. There were 43,900 packs of Gold Flake cigarettes that were made in Turkey. Each package costs Rs 390. The total value of the shipment is Rs 1,71,21,000, ”the BSF said in a statement.
A van and three cell phones were also seized during the operation.
Those arrested were identified as Arshad Hussain from Singerband village in Cachar district, Firoz Khan from Jaipur-Raja Bazar locality in Cachar, Vivek Kashyav from Bhanpuri village in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh and Suresh Kumar Sahu from the village of New Durga Nagar in the locality of Raipur of Chhattisgarh.
The BSF filed an FIR at the Lakhipur police station and deposited the seized objects at the police station.
