Residents of Victoria will soon have the chance to exchange trash for cash at an upcoming city cleanup event.

Jam One in the Can is an event organized by Love Where You Live BC to raise awareness about the harms of tobacco pollution and encourage people to pick up littered cigarette butts.

On September 4, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., residents are asked to pick up and bring as many cigarette butts as they can find to 1720 Cook Street, where they will have a chance to win big bucks. For every 1,000 butts collected, participants can choose an envelope containing $ 5, $ 10, $ 20 or $ 50. They will also be entered for a grand prize of $ 500.

As long as they are not too soggy, Love Where You Live BC will send all cigarette butts for recycling. In exchange, the organization will receive a loan that it will donate to a charitable or non-profit organization.

Participants are requested to present themselves masked and ready to physically distance themselves.
