Contraband P2.7-M cigarettes seized again in Zambo City

Police, together with officers from the Customs Office (BOC), again seized 2.7 million pesos worth of contraband cigarettes and arrested six people in Zamboanga town, a senior police official said on Monday. Thursday, November 4.

Police Colonel Rexmel Reyes, director of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO), said the shipment of contraband cigarettes was seized at around 7 a.m. on Wednesday near the village of Tumalutap, east of the city of Zamboanga.

Reyes said personnel from the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company (2ZCMFC), along with officers from the BOC, were on a maritime patrol when they intercepted a motorboat piloted by six crew members.

Reyes identified the six crew members as Romir Ajijol, 34, the skipper; Jomel Sala, 38; Admer Nawadi, 21; Alih Hakim, 44 years old; Aljamar Nawadi, 31 years old; and Una Arbair, 55.

Reyes said the motorboat was found loaded with 77 main cases and 23 rims of assorted undocumented cigarettes with an estimated market value of 2.7 million pesos.

He said the investigation showed the shipment of cigarettes came from Jolo, Sulu, and to Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay.

He said the confiscated cigarettes, crew members and motorboat had been turned over to the BOC for the laying of the appropriate charges.

Wednesday’s confiscation of contraband cigarettes was the second in the city of Zamboanga.

The first concerned the confiscation of some 1.6 million pesos of contraband cigarettes at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2, also near the village of Tumalutap, one of the island villages east of the city of Zamboanga.

The cigarette shipment also came from Jolo, Sulu and bound for Zamboanga Sibugay province. (SunStar Zamboanga)
