Couple caught, 416,000 cigarettes seized

POLICE officers operating at the checkpoint arrested a business couple and seized some 416,000 pesos worth of undocumented cigarettes in Zamboanga Sibugay province, an official said.

Police Colonel Albert Larubis, director of Zamboanga Sibugay Police, identified the arrested business couple as Gamar Amdad, 28, and his wife, Nurkaida, 28, residents of Purok Jupiter in the village of Bangkerohan, Ipel.

Larubis said the couple were arrested by members of the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Mobile Force 1st Company (1ZSPMFC) at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in Kauswagan Village, Diplahan Town.

He said 1ZSPMFC personnel along with Diplahan town police were conducting an election control operation when they reported a van being driven by Gamar.

Larubis said that upon inspection, the van without a license plate contained 11 master cases of Fort and Canon cigarettes and five half-filled master cases of Astro cigarettes with an estimated street value of 416,000 pesos.

He said the couple did not present any documents proving the legality of the shipment of cigarettes.

Larubis said the couple and the confiscated cigarettes were taken into the temporary custody of 1ZSPMFC before handing over to Customs Office in Pagadian City, Zamboanga Del Sur for proper disposal. (SunStar Zamboanga)
