Ludhiana-based clothing company on trial for failing to declare UK, Korean and Indonesian brand cigarettes worth more ₹3 crore to escape customs duties resulting in lakhs of rupees. Cartons of cigarettes were hidden behind bags of dried dates imported from the UAE.
Customs officials at Dhandari Kalan’s Inland Container Depot (ICD) have registered a case of illegal cigarette importation against Shreyans Apparels & Leatherites.
Officials said the company, through its customs agent Mojos Impex International, filed the entry invoice dated May 13, 2021 for the import of 1,120 bags of dry dates from the United Arab Emirates, in accordance with the import documents. Upon physical examination of the shipment, 250 cartons of undeclared cigarettes were found in two containers. There were 120 Esse branded boxes, 20 Benson & Hedges boxes and 110 Gudang Garam boxes containing 29.8 lakh sticks.
The total value of cigarettes has been set at over ₹3 crore.
Customs Commissioner AS Ranga said the cigarettes had not been declared. “The importation of cigarettes will be subject to the provisions contained in the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003 (prohibition of advertising and regulation of trade and commerce, production, supply and distribution) and related rules. The importer has not declared any such document in this regard and the goods are therefore prohibited for importation, ”he said.
