The Iloilo Provincial Government won the Western Visayas Department of Health (DOH) Red Orchid Award at the 2021 Regional Partners and Stakeholder Awards held online on December 10 2021.
The Red Orchid Award recognizes the exemplary work of Local Government Units (LGUs), government offices and hospitals in their global effort to implement a 100% smoke-free environment using the WHO MPOWER initiative.
MPOWER measures include tobacco use monitoring and prevention policies; protect people from the effects of smoking; offer help to quit smoking; warning about the dangers of tobacco; enforce the ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship; and increase tobacco taxes.
On August 28, 2021, Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. issued a memorandum of order to all provincial government employees to adopt a 100% smoke-free environment policy at Iloilo Provincial Capitol, Motorpool, Nursery and at the Iloilo sports complex.
The governor also issued Executive Decree 269 to reconstitute the Iloilo provincial government anti-smoking task force.
The province of Iloilo is also a member of the Regional Tobacco Control Network.
The provincial government, through the Provincial Health Bureau, disseminated IEC materials and carried out advocacy campaigns to raise public awareness against smoking.
A smoke-free / vape working group board has been established to manage the smoking cessation program. Interventions were carried out with employees who smoke.
The âNo smokingâ signs have been strategically placed on the Capitol.
The Provincial Council also adopted a provincial ordinance banning the use, sale, distribution and advertising of cigarettes and other tobacco products in certain places with corresponding penalties.
In addition, three province-run district hospitals also received the Red Orchid Award – Aleosan District Hospital in Alimodian, Ramon Tabiana Memorial District Hospital in Cabatuan, and District Hospital in Rep. Pedro Trono G. Memorial in Guimbal.
The municipalities of Concepcion and Miagao were also winners of the Red Orchid Award.
Meanwhile, Iloilo Province was named Best Performing Province in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Health and Best Performing Area (Province / HUC) in the MR-OPV SIA campaign. .
The provincial health office (FHSIS unit) has been recognized for its invaluable support in implementing the Field Health Services Information System (FHSIS) in the midst of the pandemic.
Iloilo’s Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (Ipesu) has been recognized for its valuable contribution and unwavering dedication to the Epidemiology and Surveillance (ESS) system amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The municipalities of Batad, Mina, Lambunao and San Enrique were the most successful LGUs in providing quality maternal health services for the reduction of maternal mortality from CY 2017 to September 2021.
Ajuy’s municipal rabies control committee obtained 67 percent (2/3) of the subnational declaration of island / island barangays free from rabies.
The Barangays Punta Buri and Tagubanhan in Ajuy and the Barangays Bagongon, Dungon and Maliog-liog in Concepcion were recognized to have fulfilled and met the requirements set out in the âGuidelines for declaring rabies-free areasâ and âJoint Department of Health-Department of Agricultural Declaration of the memorandum on rabies-free zones.
