100 years ago – 1922: Shortly after three o’clock yesterday afternoon, the beautiful resident of Charles Des Sauer, of Farnham Road, Upper Providence Township, north of Media borough, caught fire and despite the heroic efforts of members of the Media Fire Company , who were handicapped by lack of water, the whole building was destroyed. The cause of the fire is believed to be a faulty chimney, as when it was discovered flames were shooting from the roof above the kitchen.

75 years ago – 1947: The Chester Fire Department will put on a spectacular demonstration of firefighting techniques and equipment in a three-hour program on Saturday July 19, to show off their prowess to the public. For the first time in more than 10 years, the five companies making up the department are mobilizing for an exhibition of this type. Fifteen devices and more than 100 volunteers will be massed on the bank of Ridley Creek in Chester Park when the program opens at 2 p.m. The site is near Elkinton and Edgmont avenues.

50 years ago – 1972: The Chester-Bridgeport Bridge hovers over the Delaware River like a prehistoric animal that feeds on fresh air and is determined to consume every bit of airway in its path. The massive structure twists, turns and soars 425 feet above the Delaware River. The $115 million project – scheduled to open in the winter of 1973-74 – is on schedule, according to Rod Pieretti, project engineer for the E. Lionel Pavlo Engineering Co. of New York.

25 years ago – 1997: A man was arrested shortly after stealing sixty cartons of cigarettes worth $995 from a delivery truck at the Wawa Food Market on Ashland Avenue and MacDade Boulevard, Glenolden police reported on Friday. The suspect, whose van was cornered by the delivery truck driver after he discovered the cigarettes were missing, fled on foot and was apprehended by Constable Shawn Kennedy about a block away.

10 years ago – 2012: Like most teachers in the Penn-Delco School District, Kristin Buckmaster spent most of the recently completed school year grading assignments, checking assignments and sharing lessons with students in Aston, Brookhaven and Parkside. But for a few minutes each day, she would connect with her fellow students — the all-state wrestler from Nebraska, the Brazilian immigrant now living in Ardmore, and the Massachusetts athlete logging in from Colorado ski school. Buckmaster, a world history teacher at Sun Valley High School who also spent the last year as an instructor for Virtual High School, a K-12 online learning program.
