Brands of cigarettes and tobacco seized during Operation Mayo.

REVENUE seized a quantity of illegal cigarettes and cash during a search of a property in Mayo.

In an intelligence-led operation, tax officials, with the help of detector dog Wilson, seized approximately 8,100 cigarettes and a small amount of hand-rolling tobacco last Thursday. Cash totaling €2,320 was also seized.

The illegal cigarettes, of various brands, had an estimated retail value of over €6,100, representing a potential loss to the public purse of around €4,800.

They were discovered during a warrant search of premises in Mayo.

A man in his fifties was questioned.

On Friday, tax officials received a three-month cash detention order relating to the money seized at Castlebar District Court.

The seizure was part of ongoing tax operations targeting the underground economy and the supply of illegal tobacco products.
