Coffee and Cigarettes was released in 2003 and features several vignettes featuring famous actors including Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett. While the film is aesthetically pleasing with its black-and-white palette and arthouse cinema conventions, it was a fan-designed poster that caught the eye this morning.
The poster design currently sits proudly at the top of the DesignPorn Reddit page, and we think it’s genius. The design is minimalist but brilliantly uses empty space to represent coffee, cigarettes, and an ampersand. Not to mention the monochrome design that goes perfectly with the black and white film. It’s a really satisfying design. You can learn how to effectively use empty space on your designs by checking out our guide to negative space.
The glossy poster was designed by illustrator Viktor Hertz. According to The Hertz site, his career took off after he started drawing as a hobby and says his work is “inspired by pop culture, satire and humor, often using visual metaphors and focusing on strong ideas.” But this isn’t Hertz’s first date with clever poster designs, in fact he has designed several minimalist posters for Point Break and Forest Gump.
While we love the poster design, it seems to have left Redditors divided. One user said, “It’s smart AF”, while another user expressed their (strong) opinion that the design is “Absolutely terrible in every way possible. Bad paper texture, bad typography , unnecessary use of negative space, communicates nothing of the spirit or feel of the film “- which we found pretty harsh. Despite the disagreements, we can safely say that we are on the side of those who love the poster.
We now feel compelled to go see the movie as well. If you are feeling inspired by this design, why not check out our guide to the best poster maker online and make your own smart movie poster?
